The method involves transmitting a substitution control (Vsubs) toward a complementary braking unit, where the substitution control is generated from a torque deficit value that is function of a set point of engine braking (V-FM), and a potential braking value (Vpot) of a regenerative braking unit. The control is generated from a speed value (v) of a vehicle, a gear shift lever position value (P-L) of the vehicle, and a value indicating state of heating of hydraulic brake of the vehicle. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for simulating engine braking of a vehicle (2) a brake.
