Regenerator comprises a packed bed of energy storage elements made of a material comprising 25-90 wt.% of ferric oxide, 5-30 wt.% of alumina, less than 20 wt.% of calcium oxide, less than 25 wt.% of titania, 3-50 wt.% of silica, less than 10 wt.% of sodium oxide and balance of other compounds, where the sum of ferric oxide, alumina, calcium oxide, titania, silica and sodium oxide is greater than 80 wt.%. An independent claim is included for a heat installation comprising a unit producing heat-generating energy (12) and the regenerator (14, 14'), a heat-transfer fluid ensuring a heat exchange between the unit and the regenerator.
