Manufacturing a concrete article comprising a particulate material on a surface of the article, comprises coating a wall of a mold with an aqueous mold release composition comprising at least 1 mass% of a surface active agent, less than 30 mass% of an oil and more than 0.001 mass% of the particulate material having a diameter (D10) of greater than 0.01 mu m and diameter (D90) of lower than 100 mu m, pouring concrete in a fresh state into the mold, and removing the article from the mold after setting the concrete. An independent claim is included for the aqueous mold release composition for manufacturing the concrete article.
