Preparing a hydroconversion catalyst comprising a modified Y zeolite, comprises: preparing a protonic modified Y zeolite, whose intracrystalline structure presents at least one network of micropores, at least one network of small mesopores with an average diameter of 2-5 nm, and at least one network of large mesopores with an average diameter of 10-50 nm; and treating protonic modified Y zeolite in gas phase containing a basic compound to obtain hydroconversion catalyst. Independent claims are included for: (1) the hydroconversion catalyst obtained by the method, where the hydroconversion catalyst having a skeletal ratio of silicon and aluminum is = 2.3, and the aluminum content of extra-skeleton is reduced at least 50% compared to that of the prepared zeolite Y; and (2) hydroconverting a hydrocarbon charge, where the charge to be treated is placed in contacting with the obtained catalyst.
