The method involves providing a data carrier having faces formed by upper and lower covering layers and a core layer (6) forming a portion of body of the data carrier, where the layer is placed between the faces. The layer is associated with a visual indicator e.g. printed mark, and adhesive layer (17). A recess (8) is formed in the data carrier from one of the faces in direction of another face for receiving an electronic module until the formation operation reveals the indicator. The module is installed in the data carrier at a location in which the recess is formed in the data carrier. An independent claim is also included for a data carrier.
