The device has emitters for emitting a light ray (re) towards a point of effective contact (B) with a road (S) located in front of a motor vehicle. Receivers receive a light ray reflected by the point. A measurement unit measures an actual parameter of the reflected ray. A preliminary storage unit stores a theoretical parameter of the reflected ray returned by a theoretical contact point (A), reachable by the same emitted ray, with a road without layer of water (Ea) or ice. A calculation unit calculates thickness (e) of the ice/water layer at the effective contact point using the parameters. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting a risk of slip of a motor vehicle on a layer of water or ice covering the ground of a road.
