The method involves interconnecting a set of branches (Bj) electrically in a parallel arrangement, where each branch comprises a set of energy storage elements that are connected in a series arrangement. The two energy storage elements belonging to the two separate branches are selected, where voltages across the branches are different. The selected energy storage elements are directly assembled in the parallel arrangement. Electric currents within the assembly of the selected energy storage elements are estimated. A terminal voltage of commutation elements (Cij) is determined. An independent claim is also included for a device for managing an electrical energy storage battery.
