The method involves applying gaseous fuel (C) circulating in an injector (14) from an upstream inlet (18) to an injection tube (22) in a downstream opening of a combustion chamber (12). The pressurized fuel in the injector is subjected to a relaxation causing endothermic reaction, so that the injector is cooled, where the relaxation is caused by sudden variation of a section of a passage in which the fuel circulates. A return spring (36) is arranged in an interior face (I) of the injector and longitudinally compressed between radial surfaces of a body and a needle. An independent claim is also included for a fuel injector.
