The device has a carriage (22) comprising a plate (30). The plate is equipped with a wedging unit i.e. table (40), for wedging a wheel assembly (1). The carriage includes an indexing system (26) arranged on an assembly station that supports a cross-piece. The table is connected to the plate by a slide (48) following a transverse direction, where the wedging unit pivots around a horizontal pivoting axle (44). The plate is moved vertically with respect to the carriage, and a lever controls vertical movement of the plate, where the lever extends an arm. An independent claim is also included for a method for assembling a wheel assembly on a crosspiece of an undercarriage of a car by an operator.
