The device (10) has a support (16) for fixing the device on an element external to the device. A roller bearing (20) is mounted on a shaft including one of gear wheels. An eccentric cam (22) is mounted on the bearing and moved angularly with respect to the support. The cam includes an angular indexing unit radially extended and intended to cooperate with an indexing unit complementary to an external element for maintenance of angular position of the support with respect to the element. The angular unit includes a radial protuberance (41) mounted inside a cavity complementary to the element. An independent claim is also included for a method for assembling a wear compensation device for a gear.
