A picture light 1 includes a shade or housing 2 and a light source 3 which may comprise a number of light emitting diodes. The picture light 1 also comprises a micro-louvre filter 4 which is mounted to the shade 2 to control the spread of light emitted from the light source. The light source 3 and the filter 4 are mounted in tracks 11a, b and 12a,b on the side walls of the housing 2. Plural tracks may be provided so that the angle of the micro-louvre filter may be altered. The use of a micro-louvre filter effectively and precisely controls the lighting of an artwork or painting.
