PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the work of an automatic propelling civil engineering machine so that the machine can highly accurately and automatically move along a required curve extending for relatively short distance movement of the machine and having a small radius of curvature, without being accompanied with any complexity and high cost in determining the coordinate of a position.SOLUTION: A civil engineering machine has a machine control unit 107 which is configured to determine data for specifying the position and/or orientation of a reference point on the machine relating to a reference system independent of the position and orientation of the machine. A geometric shape made on a ground may be determined by a site probe 100. The probe 100 is used for determining the position of at least one identifiable point of the geometric shape preset in the independent reference system. Curve data defining a required curve in the independent reference system corresponding to the preset shape is at least partially determined on the basis of the position of at least one identifiable point of the preset geometric shape of the independent reference system.
