PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an azulenocyanine derivative or an isomer thereof, exhibiting useful wide range light absorption characteristics as dye for a solar cell and to provide a method of manufacturing them, and to provide a dye-sensitized solar cell using them as a light absorption dye.SOLUTION: An azulenocyanine derivative or an isomer thereof is represented by general formula (I), where at least one substituent group of R1a to R1d has at least one electron attractive group represented by -Y or -Yat its terminal and M represents two hydrogen atoms or a cation atom having a valence of 2 or greater.
