PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-retaining material for plant-cultivation with which water retention is maintained even in summer season and/or at a dry area having a small amount of rainfall, and which does not inhibit the growth of plant; and to provide a plant cultivation method.;SOLUTION: The water-retaining material for plant-cultivation is obtained by putting a sheet-like water-resistant paper (A) and a sheet-like water-permeable paper (B) together, and has water-absorbing resin (C) between (A) and (B). The sheet-like water-resistant paper (A) is such that: a sizing degree measured by the Stockigt method specified in JIS P 8122 is 1.0-110 s, and wet breaking strength (transverse direction) measured in conformity to JIS P 8135 is 0.007-0.4 kN/m.
