PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position guidance system of a hydraulic shovel and a control method for the position guidance system capable of reducing a workload of an operator. PSOLUTION: In a position guidance system of a hydraulic shovel, a calculation section calculates an approaching/leaving determination distance (D1) which shows a distance between a target work object (70) and a reachable range of a work machine (2). The calculation section allows a guidance screen in a detail mode to be displayed on a display section when the approaching/leaving determination distance (D1) is equal to or less than a prescribed threshold. The calculation section also allows the guidance screen in a wide area mode showing a wider range than the detail mode to be displayed on the display section when the approaching/leaving determination distance (D1) is larger than the prescribed threshold.
