APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE POSITION OF A SPORTS PROJECT WITHIN A SCENE, PROGRAM, AND, COMPUTER PROGRAM PRODUCT. An apparatus for determining the position of a sports projectile within a scene for a period of time during which the sports projectile is hidden from camera view, the apparatus comprising: an operable interface for receiving a first sequence of images from the scene captured by the camera at a first predetermined frame rate before the time interval and a second sequence of scene images captured by the camera at a second predetermined frame rate after the time interval; an operable sport projectile detection device for detecting the position of the sport projectile within the scene for each image in the first and second image sequences; an operable speed detection unit for determining the speed of the sport projectile before the time interval based on the detected position of the sport projectile within the scene for each image in the first image sequence and the first frame rate and the speed of the sport projectile immediately after the time interval based on the detected position of the sport projectile within the scene for each image in the second image sequence and the second predetermined frame rate; and an operable sport projectile position determining unit for determining the position of the sport projectile during the time interval using at least one of the detected sport projectile position within the scene for each image within the first and second image sequences and the determined speed of the sport projectile immediately before and immediately after the time interval.
