The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of hydrophobised hyaluronan (formula I) and to a method of encapsulating biologically active substances into nanomiceles of hydrophobized hyaluronan serving as a carrier of biologically active hydrophobic substances. Hydrophobization of hyaluronan is accomplished by the esterification reaction of hyaluronan with long chain carboxylic acids which are activated by the 2,4,6-trichlorobenzoic acid halide derivative or other organic chloride. Water-soluble hydrophobized hyaluronans can form nanomicels in an aqueous environment in which non-polar substances can be bound by non-covalently physical interactions. The core of the nanomicule forms the hydrophobic functional groups of the acyl, while the nanomicule shell forms hyaluronan. Encapsulation of substances into nanomicels can be accomplished by solvent exchange or sonication. Hyaluron nanomicels promote the penetration of bound substances in topical applications and allow the transfer of bound substances to cells. Hydrophobic hyaluronan nanomicels are useful in cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.
