The present invention relates to a process of preparing thioxanthones of the general formula 1, being characterized in that a mixture of 2-chlorothiobenzodyl chloride of the general formula II and an aromatic compound of the general formula 3 is added to a Friedel-Craft catalyst in an organic Friedel-Craft solvent. The invention further relates to the use of the thioxanthones in the field of psychotherapeutics or as activators or sensitizing agents when photopolymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers. Also disclosed is a mixture of so prepared thioxanthones.
