The invention relates to a high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) which comprises apparatuses for cooling said fuel cell by means of a coolant, with a temperature which varies only in the region of up to 20 K in the electrode space of the cell and a temperature gradient of 20-80 K between the electrode space and the coolant inlet in which a cell structure is provided which allows the heat to be dissipated at a temperature level close to 100°C and at the same time ensures a temperature level in the electrode space in the range of from 120 to 200°C, wherein the cell structure either a) has a bipolar plate-integrated cooling circuit, wherein the cooling ducts have a coating for forming a casing of low thermal conductivity, or wherein tubes comprising a material of low thermal conductivity are provided in the cooling ducts, or b) has no bipolar plate-integrated cooling circuit, wherein the bipolar plates are conducted out to the outer region of the cell on at least one side of the cell and a cooling circuit is integrated in the outer region of the bipolar plates.
