The invention provides a method for increasing the CO to H ratio in synthesis gas. The method involves passing synthesis gas through the first reactor (10) containing Cu at a first temperature that is effective for reacting CO in the synthesis gas with Cu to form copper oxide and CO. The temperature of the synthesis gas is then lowered to a second temperature, effective for the interaction of hydrogen in the synthesis gas with copper oxide, with the formation of Cu and HO. The synthesis gas is then passed through a second reactor (12) containing copper oxide, so that the synthesis gas interacts with the copper oxide.
