In the field of marine geophysical exploration, systems and methods for controlling the spatial distribution or orientation of a seismic streamer or a group of seismic streamers for geophysical surveys towed behind a seismic survey vessel are proposed. Various methods are proposed for changing the spatial distribution or orientation of such seismic streamers for geophysical surveys in response to a change in state. For example, the states of transverse flows can be determined based on configuration data obtained from positioning devices located along the length of the seismic streamer, and the new desired orientation can be determined based on the states of transverse flows. The new desired orientation may include the new desired drift angle of the seismic streamer.
