A METHOD OF CALL ADMISSION CONTROL FOR A CONTINUOUS STREAM OF DATA IN PACKET SWITCHED NETWORKS

A method of call admission control for a continuous stream of data in packet switched networks including at least two local area networks that communicate with one another across a connecting network, for use in a call attempt from a calling node in one of the local area networks across the connecting network to a receiving local area network, the method comprising: the use of a gatekeeper for the local are network comprising the calling node to construct an estimate of loss probability for the call attempt by using statistics about the success or failure of calls to a node in the receiving local area network so as to determine a packet loss rate of previous calls to the receiving local are network; and use of the calling node to decide, based on said packet loss rate of previous calls, whether to determine a current packet loss rate by sending a burst of trial packets from said calling, node to the receiving local area network, or to drop a call attempt from the calling node to that local are network. Said step of deciding whether to determine a current packet loss rate or to drop the call attempt being based at least in part on said estimate of loss probability.
