The present invention relates to an acquisition method of a new sulfonated carbon-based catalyst and its further application for biodiesel synthesis. This catalyst is obtained from cellulose in a one stage process where cellulose partial carbonization as well as sulfonation occurs simultaneously. Conseqyently, this produces a mesoporous amorphous carbon matrix with the properties of an acidic heterogeneous catalyst. Sulfonated carbon based catalyst exhibits a high catalytic activity for esterification reaction of fatty acids. A maximum yield of 97 % was achieved in fatty acid esterification reaction with methanol. This invention can be used for a direct one stage biodieselporoduction process where as the first stage is an esterification of fatty acids but second stage is an alkaline transesterification of triglycerides.
