601358 Disclosed are biaryl compounds containing at least one further ring. The compounds are PDE4 inhibitors useful for the treatment and prevention of stroke, myocardial infarct and cardiovascular inflammatory diseases and disorders. The compounds have general formula (Ia), (Ib), (Ic) or (Id). Examples of compounds of the invention are 1-[5-(3’-Chloro-2-fluoro-6-methoxy-biphenyl-3-ylmethyl)-1-oxy-pyridin-2-ylmethyl]-3-ethyl-urea; 6-(4-Fluoro-benzyl)-3-methoxy-2-(3-nitro-phenyl)-pyridine 1-oxide and 2-(6-Methoxy-3’-nitro-biphenyl-3-ylmethyl)-1,1-dioxo-1,2-dihydro-1lambda*6*-benzo[d]isothiazol-3-one.
