A hob guard for a cooktop (3) is disclosed. The hob guard comprises a substantially U shaped body in plan view with a rear wall (5) and side walls (7, 8) assembled to form a framed perimeter around the cooking surface (3). The side walls (7, 8) comprise an upper rail joined to a lower rail wherein the upper rail is angled downwardly towards the lower rail. The rear wall (6) includes a central vertical web and horizontal arms so that when assembled with the side walls (7, 8) the upper and lower horizontal arms receive corresponding upper and lower rail of the side walls (7, 8). The hob guard may be pivoted about a support surface (2).
