The present invention is a method of identifying carbonylated histones, comprising electrophoretically separating said histones in a gel comprising acrylamide, Triton X-100, glacial acetic acid and urea, incubating said gel with dinitrophenyl hydrazine-2,4 (DNPH), electrophoretically separating said histones in a gel comprising acrylamide, Tris and sodium dodecyl sulfate, transferring said histones from the previous gel to a membrane adsorber, the presence of 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP) in said membrane adsorbent and identify these histones carbonylated and its variants. The invention also provides a kit for identifying carbonylated histones comprising reagents for preparing a gel TAU, reagents for preparing a gel SDS-PAGE, 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine specific primary antibody and DNP antibody labeled secondary to the primary antibody .
