The invention relates to a method for identifying carbonylated histones, which includes the electrophoretic separation of said histones in a gel that includes acrylamide, Triton X-100, glacial acetic acid and urea; incubation of said gel with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH); electrophoretic separation of said histones in a gel that includes acrylamide, Tris- and sodium dodecyl sulfate; the transfer of said histones from the preceding gel to an adsorbent membrane; the detection of the presence of 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP) in said adsorbent membrane; and identification of said carbonylated histones and the variants thereof. The invention likewise provides a kit for identifying carbonylated histones, which includes reagents for preparing a TAU gel, reagents for preparing a SDS-PAGE gel, 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, a primary antibody specific to DNP and a secondary antibody marked vis-à-vis the primary antibody.
