A pharmaceutical unit dose composition comprising a pharmaceutically effective amount of fentanyl or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in particulate form, and particles of a bioadhesion and mucoadhesion agent having a particle size ranging from 1 to 100 microns for use in a method for treating acute or breakthrough pain, wherein said method comprises sublingual administration of that composition.
