A bidirectional DC to DC converter having a first operational mode and asecond operational mode includes a firstterminal pair that has a positive terminal and a negative terminal and thatconnects the converter to a first electric circuit, a secondterminal pair that has a positive terminal and a negative terminal and thatconnects the converter to a second electric circuit, anaccumulation element for temporary accumulation of electric energy; and aswitching circuit connected to the first terminal pair, thesecond terminal pair, and the accumulation element. Electric energy istransferred from the first electric circuit to the second electriccircuit via the accumulation element in the first operational mode of thebidirectional DC to DC converter and, from the secondelectric circuit to the first electric circuit via the accumulation element inthe second operational mode of the DC to DC converter.
