A method of manufacturing a workpiece by selective melting or selective sintering of high energy beam powder beds, comprising the steps of: (a) providing powder material (60), (b) depositing a first layer (10) of powder on a support (80), (c) scanning at least one region of said first layer (10) with this beam (95) so as to locally heat the powder of said region at a temperature above the sintering temperature of said powder, such that the particles of said powder thus melted or sintered from said region then form at least a first integral element (15), (d A second layer (20) of powder is deposited on said first layer of powder (10), (e) at least one region of said second layer (20) is scanned by the beam (95) so as to heat the powder of this region at a temperature above the sintering temperature of this powder, such that the particles of the powder thus sintered or melted form at least one second element in one piece (25), (f) Steps (d) and (e) are repeated for each new layer of powder to be deposited above a previous layer, until the complete formation of the part. Typically, the powder has a multimodal particle size distribution.
