The invention relates to autostereoscopic (glassesless) displays, and can be used for producing multiple-perspective stationary and mobile 3D televisions and 3D monitors with full-screen 3D resolution whilst maintaining compatibility with 2D images. An improvement in the quality of the stereoscopic image being observed is achieved by increasing the range of viewing angles of objects in a three-dimensional scene and the degree of comfort for the observation of a stereoscopic image by virtue of increasing the number of observation areas and the number of perspectives being observed. When implementing a specific variant of the method and when operating a specific variant of the device, the contrast of the separation of the perspectives and the quick response of the parallax optical shutter is improved by virtue of forming each column element of said parallax optical shutter on the basis of a pair of liquid crystal layers with complementary optical properties. An increase in the degree of separation of the perspectives is determined by an increase in the contrast of the modulation of the light intensity by virtue of mutual compensation of the initial birefringence and chromatic dispersion of the liquid crystal layers in each column element of the parallax optical shutter. An increase in the quick response is determined by the fact that the transition time for the switchover of images of the perspectives is determined merely by the short response time of the liquid crystal layers to an application of a high control voltage.
