Pharmaceutical composition comprising nanoparticles configured for enhanced phagocytosis by phagocytic cells and labeled with a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe bound to the outer surface thereof are provided, and uses thereof in the detection of activated immune cells in the central nervous system (CNS) of a subject.
