The invention relates to catalysts having a structure comprising nanostructured oxides arranged in layers, the surface of which is formed by a cerium-zirconium mixed oxide with a pyrochlore-type structure (phase ĸ) that can activate the hydrogen molecule at a low temperature, and the nucleus is formed by a zirconium oxide or a zirconium oxide stabilised by a dopant. The invention is part of catalytic processes wherein it is important that the catalyst has a good oxygen storage capacity, such as for example, the purification of the exhaust gases in combustion engines. The catalysts can also be applied to any other application involving reactions requiring the activation of hydrogen molecules.
