The invention relates to an apparatus for detecting apnea in an infant or adult person, essentially consisting of a housing (1) attached to the bed of the person or close enough thereto so as to be capable of monitoring the millimetric recurrent movements resulting from the breathing of said person, said housing including: at least one pyroelectric passive infrared sensor for monitoring the respiratory movements of the person; at least one high-definition optical camera for detecting the recurrent microscale movements of the breathing of the person; and a microprocessor and an assembly of fixed or removable stores for storing specific software suitable for discriminating the respiratory movements from consequential background noise and for identifying possible apnea in the person. Said apparatus includes a remote control (2) which interacts with said housing (1) via a radio link and which enables the different functionalities of said housing to be remotely managed, and an alarm is triggered if and only if said pyroelectric sensor and said optical camera together detect apnea.
