Embodiments of the present invention relate to the communications field and provide a point-to-multipoint service protecting method for a ring network and an upper ring node on the ring network, reducing time required for transmitting a service through a protection link when a fault occurs. The method comprises: the upper ring node of the point-to-multipoint service establishing a working link and a protection link that use the upper ring node as an initial node on the ring network; when a fault occurs on the ring network, the upper ring node judging whether the working link passes a fault point; if the working link passes the fault point, and a first lower ring node is located at a backward position of the upper ring node and a forward position of the fault point in a direction of the working link, the upper ring node transmitting the point-to-multipoint service at least to the first lower ring node through the working link; if the working link passes the fault point, and a second lower ring node is located at the backward position of the fault point and the forward position of the upper ring node in the direction of the working link, the upper ring node transmitting the point-to-multipoint service at least to the second lower ring node through the protection link.
