The chews comprise a core comprising a comestible material, a shell surrounding the core, and an outer layer surrounding the shell. The outer layer comprises a comestible component such as grains, ground rawhide, or combination thereof and an optional basting material. The chews are used to occupy the attention of an animal and to promote the health and wellness of the animal.
