Provided is a thread inspection method, wherein in a thread production process for producing a thread traveling continuously in a longitudinal direction, an image of the traveling thread is captured, and the total length of the traveling thread is inspected at high speed from obtained image data to thereby obtain information relating to a thread defect without falsely recognizing a case where the thread is merely shaking or a case where the thread is merely traveling obliquely as a thread defect. This thread inspection method is characterized in that an image of a traveling thread is captured by an image capturing means, and image data obtained by the image capturing means is subjected to data processing by a data processing means, the data processing comprising: (a) a step for calculating a plurality of thread widths in a predetermined section in a traveling direction from the image data relating to the traveling thread; (b) a step for calculating a variation in thread width from the plurality of thread widths; and (c) a step for comparing the variation in thread width with a first threshold value.
