The control module (12) has a communication channel (17) for transmitting a detection signal (19) to a domestic appliance i.e. cooktop (2), for determining the position of the cooktop, where the functionality of the control module for operating the cooktop is dependent on the position of the cooktop. The detection signal is transmitted upon receiving a radio signal (18) from the cooktop, where the control module is activated when the control module is located in a close range to the cooktop. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a domestic appliance with a portable control module.
