The stirrup insert (24) can be releasably connected to a crosspiece (20) of a stirrup and has an upper bearing surface (30) for a riding shoe. The stirrup insert (24) has an insert piece (36) and a carrier part (34). The insert piece (36) has the bearing surface (30) and is releasably held on the carrier part (34). The carrier part (34) has a lower side (40) and at least one lock (50). When the stirrup insert (24) is used in practice, the crosspiece (20) is situated between the lower side (40) and the lock (50). The carrier part (34) can be released from the crosspiece (20) only when the at least one lock (50) is in the opened state. The stirrup with a crosspiece (20) is provided with such a stirrup insert (24).
