The present disclosure provides a novel approach for solar irradiance measurement based on neural networks, which may be used in photovoltaic power plants to sense solar irradiance and hence enhance efficiency. An irradiance sensor may be implemented through one or more of: a photovoltaic cell, a temperature sensor, and a low-cost microcontroller. The use of a microcontroller allows for a straightforward calibration and interfacing, via RS232, RS485, Ethernet, or any other communication device known in the art, with the rest of the PV power plant control system. The microcontroller may implement one or more neural networks using accurate double-precision mathematic library, C compilers and integrated development environment. Calibration of cell irradiance may be performed utilizing a PV cell model obtained, for example, from manufacturer datasheets or laboratory testing.
