The invention relates to a skin-core type recycled polyester staple fiber and a preparation method thereof. The recycled polyester staple fiber is formed by a skin layer and a core layer. The skin layer is low-melting-point recycled polyester, a melting point of the low-melting-point recycled polyester is 70-160℃, content of the carboxylic end group is smaller than or equal to 35 mmol/kg, and the intrinsic viscosity is 0.5-1.0 dL/g. The core layer is high-melting point recycled polyester, a melting point of the high-melting-point recycled polyester is 250-270℃, content of the carboxylic end group is smaller than or equal to 20 mmol/kg, and the intrinsic viscosity is 0.7-1.0 dL/g. The two types of polyester fusant enter a composite spinning component after being metered by a metering pump thereof; the fusant jetted from a spinneret plate of the composite component is cooled, wound, bundled, drawn, sized, cut off, and packaged to obtain the skin-core type recycled polyester staple fiber. The skin-core type recycled polyester staple fiber prepared by using the method of the present invention is stable and excellent in quality.
