The locations and/or strengths of inter-modulation products in a modulated multi-carrier signal transmission, are predicted by:a) producing a polynomial arithmetic expression associated with the generation of 3rd order and/or 5th order inter-modulation products arising from the combining of all of the multi-carrier signal subsets of the transmission associated with those inter-modulation products, andb) embedding the polynomial arithmetic expression between a single FFT/IFFT pair, such that the locations and strengths of all 3rd order and/or all 5th order inter-modulation products are predicted.;Additionally, the frequency channel location of one of those carrier signals that are responsible for the generation of IMD in the transmission is determined by:c) partitioning the plurality of carrier signal channels into a plurality of non-overlapping subsets,d) determining the reduction in the strength of inter-modulation products resulting from the removal of each subset from the transmission, ande) comparing the determined strengths,whereby the subset whose removal results in the largest determined reduction in strength of inter-modulation products in the channel of interest is determined to be primarily responsible for the generation of inter-modulation distortion in the signal.
