The invention relates to a method for automatically detecting non-motorised road users (3) in the surroundings of a moving motor vehicle (2) on the basis of images that are recorded by means of at least one camera (1) mounted in or on the motor vehicle (2) and that are analysed for further information contained therein. According to the invention, the images of a detected non-motorised road user (3) in the surroundings of the motor vehicle (2) are analysed to determine whether said road user (3) clearly wishes at this instant to give the driver (9) of the motor vehicle (2) and/or other road users a traffic-related visual message. The driver (9) of the motor vehicle (2) is informed when such a message is detected.
