Producing refractory material based on magnesia or magnesia spinel, comprises (a) providing a mixture comprising a first component made of magnesia or magnesia spinel and a second component comprising substances by which an aluminum nitride polytypoid-containing binder phase is formable, when acted with temperature, and (b) exposing the mixture to a temperature in which the second component forms the binder phase, and simultaneously applying pressure to the mixture. The first component exhibits an average grain size which is greater than average grain size of the second component. An independent claim is also included for the refractory material produced by the above method, comprising grains made of magnesia or magnesia spinel, and a binder phase which comprises aluminum nitride polytypoid, surrounding the grains.
