The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method to decide and change inner and outer surfaces of meshes upon surface generation. The inner and outer surfaces of the meshes are decided by analyzing a vertex index order of the respective triangular meshes in a mesh model generated using an automatic mesh generation function. Also, the inner and outer surfaces are decided by analyzing a normal direction of the respective triangular meshes. In addition, the inner and outer surfaces are decided by analyzing an angle between a vector directed from the center of gravity of the mesh model to each vertex and a normal line of a mesh surface including the vertex. A contrast expression indicating the inner and outer surfaces can accurately be changed and displayed by changing the vertex index order of the respective triangular meshes in accordance to the determined inner and outer surfaces.
