A method of operating a contactless integrated circuit (IC) card reader includes the steps of calculating a first transition time of at least one first magnetic pulse in a first transition interval, which is from a first level to a reference level in at least one first magnetic pulse, in a calibration phase; calculating a second transition time of a second magnetic pulse in a second transition interval, which is from a second level to the reference level of the second magnetic pulse, in a detection phase; and determining whether a contactless IC card is within a communication range of the contactless IC card reader based on the comparison of the first and second transition times.
