A method of controlling a digital image processing apparatus in which a moving-picture photographing mode is performed, and a digital image processing apparatus using the method are provided to form a plurality of frames as a representative frame according to the order of motion-vector difference values, thereby rapidly searching a moving file that a user wants. When images of a series of frames are stored in a moving picture file during a moving picture photographing mode, a motion-vector difference value of a current frame is calculated. The motion-vector difference value of the current frame is the sum of gradation change amounts per each pixel between a previous frame and the current frame. A plurality of frames is selected according to a bigger size order of the motion-vector values. A representative frame is formed by reducing image data of the selected frames.
