The present invention relates to a composite material for mercury adsorption and a method for removing mercury in water using the same. In particular, the present invention relates to a technique for improving water quality by adsorbing mercury from water using a composite material in which silica particles are dispersed on a PVA polymer matrix. According to the present invention, the composite material has porous, thermally stable, and high surficial properties through the hydrolysis and dehydrating polymerization of silica precursors in a PVA matrix. The composite material also has chelate functionalities and excellent mercury ion adsorption. When the composite material is used as an adsorbent agent, water which is contaminated by mercury can be effectively purified. The composite material can sufficiently replace existing mercury adsorbing agents by means of excellent mercury adsorbing effects. Also, production costs are reduced, and a production process is very simple.
