The present invention relates to a residual heat removal system of a research nuclear reactor to remove residual heat of a core of the research nuclear reactor and, specifically, to a passive residual heat removal system of a research nuclear reactor which can solve a concern of air flow into the core, three dimensional flow in a lower plenum of the nuclear reactor, and a flow imbalance phenomenon within the core due to the three dimensional flow in a lower plenum. To this end, the present invention comprises a water tank of the nuclear reactor having the core of the nuclear reactor and cooling water, where the core is submerged, within the research nuclear reactor with downward flow within the core, having an opened upper part and surrounded by a shielding wall; a gravity core cooling tank configured at one side of the water tank of the nuclear reactor to open into the water tank of the nuclear reactor, storing the water therein, and exposing an upper part to the atmosphere to maintain an atmospheric pressure state; a primary cooling system equipped with a primary cooling pump for circulating the cooling water within the water tank of the nuclear reactor and performing heat exchange with the cooling water of the water tank of the nuclear reactor to cool the cooling water within the water tank of the nuclear reactor, wherein the gravity core cooling tank is arranged between the water tank of the nuclear reactor and the primary cooling pump such that a pipe of the primary cooling system is installed to penetrate the gravity core cooling tank, and a residual heat removal pipe branches off at a pipe of the primary cooling system within the gravity core cooling tank such that its lower end part is extended and formed to be submerged in the cooling water within the gravity core cooling tank.
