Disclosed are a multimedia apparatus using transparent control areas and gesture patterns based on a touchscreen and a multimedia control method using the same. The multimedia apparatus using transparent control areas and gesture patterns based on a touchscreen includes the touchscreen in which the transparent control areas are divided to control video, and which outputs an input signal according to a selection of any one of the transparent control areas by a user′s touch; a processing unit which determines an operation mode according to the input signal, and displays a processing image corresponding to the operation mode on the touchscreen; and a memory unit which stores information and video information according to the operation mode, wherein the operation mode is one of an area operation mode executed according to the transparent control areas and a gesture operation mode executed according to the recognition of the user′s specific gesture.
